pls read and help!

mq and xy are having quite a terrible headache.

kkh has requested us to choose our specialty for the transition to practice posting (this posting is considered the final posting if we are not taking honours). the options given are: paeds medical, paeds surgical and gynaecology.

Generally, paeds medical wards deal with children who has gastroenteritis, asthma, and sometimes a few come in for social problems. Paeds surgical ward, according to some friends, deal with children who had falls, appendicitis, fractures. Gynaecology deals with women. the gynae ward i went was mainly dealing with women coming in for abortion, or women going for other surgeries.

mq and xy are more towards paeds than gynae. but one of their concerns is that it might be difficult for them to adapt to adult ward setting if they decide to transfer to other hospital after finishing their bond, because the staff nurses in paeds ward do not do as much as what the staff nurses do in adult wards (stuffs such as taking blood, setting plug).

so if that's the concern, then why not choose gynae? at least we're still dealing with adults? personally, i dont really like the gynae environment because i dont feel good seeing dead fetus. and i can foresee dragging myself to work everyday if i chose gynae. but there is a possibility that i will get used to seeing it eventually.

anw, there's also a possibility of going to gynae onco ward (dealing with women with cancer). but i think that'll also be quite depressing.

as what some friends have said, choose what you like! i prefer paeds! but i have to think about my future too! i have thought about gg into midwifery. bt im not sure whether choosing paeds will be helpful at all.

i have also considered that when choosing specialty for the final posting, i should choose somewhere with a lot of learning opportunities (i.e. busy ward). Paeds ward is quite slack.

lastly, the environment is a factor too. paeds ward is generally more lively, and the staff nurses are easy to get along, compared to gynae.

sigh. can u understand our dilemma??? please give some opinions!

If I were you, I'd choose paed coz I want something I like, especially when I first step into the work force. Imagine the dread you'll develop after doing what you don't really like for 1 whole year. I may very well lose passion in nursing totally.

After 1 year in a 'happy' environment, I'd challenge myself to take on the less happy environment and the more hands on and stuffs.

Just what I'd do if I were you lahz. =)
